Essay on Interpretation of A Feminist View on Pornography

Interpretation of A Feminist View on Pornography The article that I will be breaking down in the following paper is â€Å"Pornography, Civil Rights, and Speech† by Catherine A. MacKinnon. I believe the best area to start is to briefly describe MacKinnon and her article. MacKinnon is a professor of law at the University of Michigan. The article deals with the affects of pornography on society. MacKinnon feels that some pornography should be illegal. Her reason for this view is not that she finds it offensive, but rather that she considers it as a form of sexual discrimination. There are many different views on pornography ranging from the belief that it is harmless fantasy all the way to it being a prime factor of the deterioration for†¦show more content†¦She continues on to explain how her thoughts on society’s views of free speech. She says in out society, everyone has a right to free speech, and if that right is not chosen, then it is assumed that it has been done so for a reason. To her, the law of sex di scrimination, and the First Amendment, operate largely within the realm of these beliefs. MacKinnon defines feminism as the discovery that women do not live in this world, that the person occupying this realm is a man, even more of a man if he is white and wealthy. She has an obvious distaste for the structure and the beliefs of modern society. She says that in a society that allows people to reap the benefits, it is merely men whom do all the reaping. Feminism is a discovery because it is the first movement to take seriously the role of women in society. She is steadfast in the belief that women live in a world of inequality. To state such a theory, and not back it up, would be pointless, so she follows with some numerical data. The article delves into specifics about rape, but what seems most important, is that a recent report stated that 44% of women have had an encountered with rape; 85% of women will be forced to deal with sexual harassment in the work place; 25%-33% of women will be battered at home; 38% of little girls will be molested in or out of their homes. These numbers are a little shocking to read. She warrants them to women finallyShow MoreRelatedFeminism and Porn Essay1766 Words   |  8 Pages The idea that pornography gives feminists of differing opinions this middle ground that they can meet on and see how to articulate the different desires of feminism and what they want to turn it into is one of the main reasons Catherine Lumby argues that feminists need pornography (par 60). War Is Not a Game free essay sample

War Is Not a Game Etgar Keret’s â€Å"Not Human Beings† is the story of Schmulik Stein, a soldier who is young and jaded by the realities of death and violence. As an officer during the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, he is forced to recognize the serious nature of conflict he is involved in when he is recruited to go with Israeli border patrol officers. He is then put to the greatest test of all, to dehumanize, stand his ground and witness things he may never be able to forget. At the end of the story Stein realizes that this is no longer a game but life and death. Keret suggests that while some people are exposed to the atrocities of war become demonized by it; others remain intact with their humanity but can ultimately become lost individuals due to the trauma. While the Israeli border patrol officers refer to certain races as not human beings shows their lack of respect toward the human race, it is fair to say they have been demonized. We will write a custom essay sample on War Is Not a Game or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Stein, however, deplores the depreciating value of human life and is beaten by fellow officers for objecting to the cruel treatment of an old Arab man. Violence unfolds before his eyes, watching as a man is destroyed as if he were not a man at all. Rather than admitting what is happening in front of him, Stein pictures things from a different perspective. Taking what one of the officers stated and using it, he views the Arab man as an object instead of a human being. This is what ultimately helps him cope mentally, with the situation in his own way. In the beginning of the story is a young man who is merely more concerned with his backgammon game than the war that is at hand. He is in the beginning portrayed as an ignorant and impatient man, naive to the fact that he is in fact in the middle of war. As he so simply states to his comrade â€Å"If you don’t shoot the dice, I’ll go to the personnel officer right now and ask him to send me. Maybe with those guys. I’ll at least be able to finish a game. † (755) When driving into the city with the four patrol officers, he watches as one of the officers (the mute) hits an Arab bystander walking down the street, the other officers laughing and not concerned for the man at all. â€Å"You ran him over on purpose, you psycho, you ran over a human being on purpose† (757) He asked furiously. While this victim lies on the floor the officers bring another Arab and begin beating him. Enough† (757) Stein protested. As others continued their beatings and Stein being prevented from helping either of the men, they try to justify their reasons â€Å"they might look like us on the outside, but they’re not. † (757) They stand one of the Arabs men up to show Stein exactly what they meant, Stein att empts to move toward the man but is hit over the head by the mute with his truncheon and forced to watch as they cut the man across his â€Å"trembling stomach† (758) Watching candy, phones, coins and other objects fall from the man, Stein faints. He wakes under a tent in a bed slowly gets up and he grabs a knife with a broken compass and follows the â€Å"phosphorescent needle† not knowing where it leads. By the end of the story is seems that he has had no other option than to realize that this is all more than a backgammon game, it’s no game at all. For this Stein is a dynamic character, he transitions from an inexperienced boy to a man who has seen men being murdered in front of his face and yet at the same time did not join in and think it was right. Etgar Keret uses third person limited omniscient which allows his readers to have an indirect access to Stein’s feelings with an exception of the beginning of the story when leaving with the patrol officers he thinks â€Å"It’s not so bad. Only a week. † Concentrating on Stein the entire story his actions and words give the reader the opportunity to form their own emotional responses to the events. Being able to feel what Stein is feeling although not physically but mentally, it’s as if the reader is watching the story unfold in front of your own eyes. At the end of the story, for a moment Stein too is guilty of dehumanizing the old Arab, when he pictures the man as an object rather than seeing the reality of the brutality he imagines things that are unrealistic, as do the officers when referring to the man’s insides â€Å"Don’t touch the candy. It’s poisoned. †(758) Had Keret used first person, the reader would be more in sync with what the narrator felt which would have manipulated the story and would not have allowed the reader to create their own ideas or emotions, it would have been the main character telling the reader how they felt.

Video games in education settings free essay sample

Video games in education We have a misguided idea about video games that they are violent and they cause violent behavior in kid. But, we also like to ignore that video games can actually be beneficial. We can use video games for rehab purposes, for training purposes and most important in our education system. One of the biggest benefit of video games are that they are entertaining. Kids or teenagers, who play video games, know the difference between fantasy world and the real world and they act accordingly. The United States of Americas Army is using video game stimulations for training purpose. Even our heath care systems have started to use videogames for treating different sickness and also in different rehabilitation programs. Therefore I dont believe that video games cause violent behavior in kids or teenagers. Video game works as a stress reliever and they also helps in concentration and coordination. We will write a custom essay sample on Video games in education settings or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Whenever I am stressed or have no idea how to solve a problem at home, I used to play Assassins Creed on my playstation3, but now days when I in those situations I play bejeweled or angry birds on my iPad. I feel that a word with friends and scramble are great app for smart phone or for iPad because it competitive and also n helps in developing your vocabulary. For the iPad and iphone, there are lots of apps that can be used for education purposes for example the sky view app it gives brief description of different celestial bodies around us and its location too. Southern Methodist University in Dallas Texas has a program where first year engineering students get together and built a robot. This program is only applicable for mechanical, electrical students who are taking introduction class in their disciplines and only for computer science engineering students who are taking honors Java programming class. These students will be divided into groups and each roup will have students from each discipline in it, but the number of students from each discipline may vary. They have to build a robot using Legos NXT kit, Wii remote, LED light receptors and Java program. The function of this robot is find the firing line when it placed in a field and then shot the ping pong ball into a hole three times and each time the size of the hole will change. The design and the building part of the robot are done by the mechanical engineering students. Electrical engineering students fix the electrical components and write small programs so that the robot can translate the LED lights. The computer science students write the program for the robots movements, shooting the ping pong ball. The reason why the college has this program is to make sure that students get to practice what they have learned and see whether they can learn new information on their own and part of this project is for the grades too. As a result students have shown great interest in robotics club and this club is successful one too. Robot building project was the most important project for me. This project thought me how to work in groups and interact with others while working in groups, how to dived the Jobs and most importantly ask for elp when having problems. Projects like this can sure help students in learning new topics easily. From my personal experience Java is not my strongest programming language but I sure that I will be able to write programs using Java it need and some help. This project has also helped me in changing my learning style also. By introducing video games in our education system I am sure students especially the teenagers will benefit from it but it will be challenging also. Introduction of video games in education system is still in development stage even though it mass appeal mong younger generation. But when they are introduced in our education system, it will surely challenge the traditional way of learning things. In traditional ways of learning new information, students have to listen to what their teachers or professors are lecturing that day. If they miss a day or more, it becomes impossible for students to make up for those days and even to teachers or professors to explain that information all over again for that person in class or during office hours. If the topic is hard students have no choice but to learn it by heart or some people like to call it earning like a parrot i. e. without understanding what the topic is about or students have to skip that topic and concentrated on some other topic. But with video games students will be able to learn on their own pace. They will be motivated to learn new things because video games have made them entertaining. Video games will present information in multiple visual and auditory modes which will help students who have different learning styles (Mayo, Merrilea J). Video games can help in reinforcing information taught (Mayo, Merrilea J). By rewarding them with points or bonuses that an be used later in the game, they can achieve these bonuses or points by completing certain task in game (Mayo, Merrilea J). By doing this students will develop greater self-confidence and self-efficacy too (Mayo, Merrilea J). When I was in high school the most difficult subjects for me was math and science. The reason was I did not understand the functions of different elements or components in it. In those day I did not have luxury of using video games or computer to help me with my problems, the best option I had was to ask my friends, teachers if I still dont understand, then I had to learn it by heart or skip it. But now a days there are video games that can help in learning mathematical functions for example paper toss game app on smart phones or on iPad. The game looks simple but there are certain elements we need to consider while playing it such as air flow direction the distance of the bucket etc. For that we do certain calculation in our mind without even thinking about it and we get exited whenever we make the paper in the bucket. AquaMoose is another video game that does the same as paper toss game, but the difference is that student gets to explore mathematical concepts in 3D. Study was conducted by Jason Elliot, Lori Adams, and Amy Bruckman by using two pre-calculus having 30 students in each from BSH public high school in central Georgia. They gave this game to one class and used the other class as the control group. They were surprised by the outcome of their study. Some students said to them they would like to learn using this game and some said that they would do something else that playing this game. The class which was used as the controlled group said that they like to use this game. Some students said to them that this game was not up to their expectations. They conclude saying that to encourage tudents to learn using video games the quality of the product has to be best and also entertaining. Men/boys are normally considered to be visual and hands on learners, but there are girls who are visual learners too. Most time ot the time i rue nad difficulties when I was learning now write computer programs in my high programming class. I did fine in learning the theory portion because I studied it by writing over and over again. But when I had to write the code I always struggled because I did not have the tools need to practice it. But later I was able to practice and made good grade in the final lab exam. Something happened to e when is started to work in a hospital, in beginning it was difficult and when I had questions regarding entering certain orders in the computer, I had tough time when some verbally said how to enter them, the only way I learned to enter them was when some showed it to or made me to do it while they were showing how to enter it in the computer and That how I learned. This is same with video games; boys spend more time playing video games than girls. Girls due play video games but not as much as boys do. Video games in education system will make visual learners to retain information without even known that they are learning. Due to its high graphic environment, challenge in the game and it is more hands on learning style. Whenever a product is introduced in the market, first thing I do is talk about is its negative side not the positive side, until I buy it or use it and then I will start talking about is positive side for example when apple announced that they are coming up with iPad. First thing I did was that I went and read about it and then deiced that I will not buy it because Just bigger version of phone or iPod even if the review were great. But after few months I went and brought it now I cannot live without it. Same hing is video games in education system educators look at the negative side of it, than the positive side and try to utilize it for education system. Video games like Alga- Blaster, Reader Rabbits have become popular among students because those games can be easily integrated into the education system and can be used during independent study time (Kurt Squire). There are video games that are not used for educational purpose but have help students to engage actively and think quickly Pac- Man is example for such a video game. This game has made players to work together and share their tips and secrets in finishing the game (Kurt Squire). By sharing ideas students can learn to work in groups and fell confident in sharing their ides with one another freely by not worrying whether their solution is right or wrong. The reason boys spend more time playing video games than studying is because they are entertaining, have high quality graphics and also have trophies or bonus that can be used later in the game. So they feel comfortable playing games for hours and struggle while studying, but they can even spend time reading graphic novels. To encourage students in reading school information video games must have clear goals hat students can find meaningful, multiple goal structure and scoring to give students feedback on their progress, multiple difficulty level to adjust the game difficulty to learn new skills, random element of surprise, and finally emotionally appealing fantasy and metaphor that is related to game skill (Kurt Squire). Video game like Civilization Ill is common among high school history student, but it is not the best game to play or learning information (Kurt Squire). There is no silver bullet that will make students to learn new information the only way possible is by making t interesting and by motivating them. Video games work on teedback system tor example whenever a task I is accomplished in the game there is a bonus or a trophy, which makes player to keep on playing due to high curiosity. The make video games work in your education system educators need to implement Input-process-outcome (IPO) model for learning and playing computer game (Lee Dee Miller). In short this model can be called as a feedback system. This model was later modified to IPO-GD which describes the learning process of students when they are developing or playing games (Lee Dee Miller). Basically it means that whether a game is developed or played by students there has to be feedback system in the game. To implement this model in educational based video games, video games developers have to work with teachers from different fields so that they can make study material interesting and a way to grade their students without letting students know that they are being graded for the study material they are playing as video games. From my personal experience I have solved problems sometimes while playing video games. Sometimes I came up with new idea while playing video games. Even I have questioned myself while playing how is possible and how can I use this in my personal life. For example I like the graphics from the video game The Mummy it has sequence where a book open on its own I am trying to learn that animation portion so that I can use it on my web page in different way. There was a game called The Bible for playstaion2 1 used to play with my brother and sister when they had to review for their Bible quiz on Old Testament. This game was based on events from Old Testament. Before I wanted to be physical therapist I wanted to be software engineer or a video game developer. There are games where people interact with other over the internet and play with them online for hours and sometimes they play with friends, family members staying in different area or with strangers. If they are playing with strangers they develop friends or trust even though they have not seen them in some case it can be harmful or in some cases it has be beneficial. If video games are introduced in our education system this area of video games needs to be exploited properly. This makes them responsible for they are part of learning information while they are playing video games or doing some kind of group work. When I was in middle school, I was afraid to approach most of my middle school teachers for help sometimes it gave me nightmares. With games or the internet students will be able to approach their teachers more freely and teachers will be able to keep the content of the game under control by releasing information that is need for that time Video games have mass appeal among the younger generation especially in United States of America and Japan. https://website.education.wisc.edu/kdsquire/tenure-files/42-cot.pdf https://mcdb.colorado.edu/files/history/mcdb_cu_boulder_history.pdf http://videogames.procon.org/ http://apueduc513.weebly.com/week-2-readingsvideos.html https://www.twulasso.com/

St. Helena, Mother of Roman Emperor Constantine I

St. Helena, Mother of Roman Emperor Constantine I Helena was the mother of Roman Emperor Constantine I.  She was considered a  saint in the eastern and western churches, reported to be the discoverer of the true cross. Dates: About 248 CE to about 328 CE; her birth year is estimated from a report by the contemporary historian Eusebius that she was about 80 near the time of her death.Feast Day: August 19 in the western church, and May 21 in the eastern church. Also known as:  Flavia Iulia Helena Augusta, Saint Helena Helenas Origin The historian Procopius reports that Constantine named a city in Bithynia, Asia Minor, Helenopolis, to honor her birthplace, which implies but not with certainty that she was born there. That location is now in Turkey. Britain has been claimed as her birthplace, but that claim is unlikely, based on a medieval legend retold by Geoffrey of Monmouth. The claim that she was Jewish is also unlikely to be true. Trier (now in Germany) was claimed as her birthplace in 9th and 11th-century lives of Helena, but thats also unlikely to be accurate. Helenas Marriage Helena met an aristocrat, Constantius Chlorus, perhaps while he was among those fighting Zenobia. Some later sources allege they met in Britain. Whether they married legally or not is a matter of dispute among historians. Their son, Constantine, was born about 272. Its also not known whether Helena and Constantius had other children. Little is known of Helenas life for more than 30 years after her son was born. Constantius achieved higher and higher rank first under Diocletian, and then under his co-emperor Maximian. In 293 to 305, Constantius served as Caesar with Maximian as Augustus in the Tetrarchy. Constantius was married in 289 to Theodora, daughter of Maximian; either Helena and Constantius had divorced by that point, he had renounced the marriage, or they were never married. In 305, Maximian passed the title of Augustus to Constantius. As Constantius was dying in 306, he proclaimed his son by Helena, Constantine, as his successor. That succession seems to have been decided during Maximians lifetime. But that bypassed the younger sons of Constantius by Theodora, which would later be grounds for contention about the imperial succession. Mother of an Emperor When Constantine became emperor, Helenas fortunes changed, and she appears back in the public view. She was made nobilissima femina, noble lady. She was granted much land around Rome. By some accounts, including Eusebius of Caesarea, a major source for information about Constantine, in about 312 Constantine convinced his mother, Helena, to become a Christian. In some later accounts, both Constantius and Helena were said to have been Christians earlier. In 324, as Constantine won major battles ending the civil war in the wake of the failure of the Tetrarchy, Helena was granted the title of Augusta by her son, and again she received financial rewards with the recognition. Helena was involved in a family tragedy.  One of her grandsons, Crispus, was accused by his stepmother, Constantines second wife, Fausta, of trying to seduce her. Constantine had him  executed. Then Helena accused Fausta, and Constantine had Fausta executed as well.  Helenas grief was said to be behind her decision to visit the Holy Land. Travels In about 326 or 327, Helena traveled to Palestine on an official inspection for her son of the construction of churches that he had ordered. Although the earliest stories of this journey omit any mention of Helenas role in the discovery of the True Cross (on which Jesus was crucified, and which became a popular relic), later in the century she began to be credited by Christian writers with that find. In Jerusalem, she is credited with having a temple to Venus (or Jupiter) torn down and replaced with the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, where the cross was supposed to have been discovered. On that journey, she also is reported to have ordered built a church on the location identified with the burning bush in the story of Moses. Other relics she is credited with finding on her travels were nails from the crucifixion and a tunic worn by Jesus before his crucifixion. Her palace in Jerusalem was converted to the Basilica of the Holy Cross. Death Her death at perhaps Trier in 328 or 329 was followed by her burial at a mausoleum near the Basilica of St. Peter and St. Marcellinus near Rome, built on some of the lands which had been granted to Helena before Constantine was emperor. As happened with some other Christian saints, some of her bones were sent as relics to other locations. St. Helena was a popular saint in medieval Europe, with many legends told about her life. She was considered a model for a good Christian woman ruler.

A COUNTRY BOY CAN SURVIVE

When asked What is constituting a redneck? Various answers are wonderful. The people of the country are regarded as drunk, racist, useless people, even Monticello. I lived in Monticello for 16 years, most of them are in rural areas, but not all. As it is certainly the atmosphere we are looking for, we chose Monticello to do research. To become a country man here, you must have some qualities like a big track like a rebellious flag, and you have to wear the right way. I grew up in a world I rarely experience. This is the unpaved road and track pickup world. When I sang a route from Northern California to South Alabama during the country boy where Hank Williams Jr. could survive, he was really singing my northern California. 4 hours, FFA, Bath Splash Party, High School Soccer. It is free. The period before the phone. Curfew is the only true limit. As long as we get home somewhere at midnight, we can solve any troubles we want. We are Cinderella, a rural man who went home from the backi ng ball. One day, a young couple named Maltese and John found a boy sleeping in the old chair of the front porch. His arrival is as marvelous as possible. I have never heard that everyone goes to a small farm walking on an unpaved road. There is only one clue. There was a handwritten note in my pocket. But as the days and weeks expanded, Marta and John have not said a word yet, but I liked Jelly Beans and found out that I liked it on any surface. I'm very happy to play with drums, my dogs, Beagle dogs, family cows. Most importantly, he is a very enthusiastic and proficient artist who creates not only capricious and fantasy scenes, but also landscapes full of blue trees, red roads and purple animals. Is this probably a clue to his hometown? You can ask this question nationwide, but I ask this boy everyday. Who is the villain in the country where killers in neighboring countries can walk freely? Who survives the corn meal that was excluded after the family villain and the boys were ap proved by his parents? Who is the villain when your escaped citizen causes conflict in neighboring countries? Maybe we are asking the wrong question. In order to enjoy this benefit, you have to look at past negative factors. These are the issues covered in William Golding's novel The Lord of the Flies. The story is a story of a group of young boys who were forced to learn how to survive on an island surviving in an airplane accident. Through the story, the boys change each other, open each other, and eventually they will fight between them. The Lord's Lord casts doubts about the effects of innocence, civilization, and power. Ralf immediately began leading the boys. These boys can light a fire, but Jack encourages them to concentrate on hunting rather than fire. Fire is out of control. The little boy disappeared and was presumed to have died.

Asset Forfeiture as a Tool in Combating Terrorist Financing Essay

Asset Forfeiture as a Tool in Combating Terrorist Financing - Essay Example This research will begin with the statement that asset forfeiture can be employed as a tool against terrorist financing to control this crime. â€Å"Asset forfeiture laws allow for the seizure (and eventual forfeiture) of property connected with criminal activity†. In addition, Worrall informs, â€Å"forfeiture extends beyond criminal proceeds to include property that is used to facilitate or carry out criminal activity. Such forfeitures can include property that â€Å"is used or intended to be used in any manner or part to commit or facilitate the commission of a violation†¦Ã¢â‚¬ Therefore, asset forfeiture is a confiscation of the assets that are part of a criminal activity and among such criminal activities, terrorism is of superior quality as it affects a wide number of people nationally as well as internationally. The law enforcement agencies working in the USA are of the opinion that asset forfeiture is a fruitful way to combat against terrorist financing. Eric Green informs that money laundering and terrorist financing are such criminal activities that can be controlled by means of asset forfeiture, as â€Å"the criminal proceeds† will be taken away from â€Å"the criminals†. The illegal forces are somewhat dejected to stop their unlawful activities and the proceeds can be utilized for building purposes. According to Green, â€Å"Asset sharing enhances international forfeiture cooperation by creating an incentive for countries to work together, regardless of where the assets are located or which jurisdiction will ultimately enforce the forfeiture order.†Ã¢â‚¬ Therefore, asset forfeiture to control terrorist financing can be used for increasing cooperation between countries and this cooperation is also for combating against terrorism financing internationally. Asset forfeiture is also categorized by some critics as an effort to rob people of their rights under jurisdiction. They claim that government tries to snatch away people’s property making them liable for any criminal activity whether they are indulged in it or not (Levy, 1996). There should be proper lawful activity and the accuser should be facilitated with a right to fight for his right. Otherwise, law enforcement officials consider it their right to confiscate any one from his assets accusing him of involving in any kind of crime (Levy, 1996). To combat terrorist financing, the government of USA has taken enough measures out of which, categorization of suspicious activities is one. Incoherent account transactions, high amount of inward bound and outward account transactions without any specified purpose or reason, transference of large amounts of money from one bank account to another on the name of charities with no particular need and so on. All the mentioned activities point towards suspicious activities and come under suspicion in terms of terrorist financing and require a check from law enforcement agencies. If the people using account for any suspicious activity are caught and there are proofs for terrorist financing, then asset forfeiture or confiscation is taken as a crucial step by law enforcement authorities with prior permission from government bodies (Rush & Hackett, 2004). Credit card fraud, smuggling, welfare fraud, trading, money laundering methods for funds transfers and much more are employed by terrorists on international basis for transferring and using money for terrorist activities (Levy, 1996). According to The Economist (2005), â€Å"Many experts, both in government and the private sector, admit that the chances of detecting terrorists' funds in a bank sufficiently far in advance of a planned attack that it can be prevented are incredibly small.† Because of minimized chances to stop such activities and financial transactions, the government and law enforcement agencies carry a higher responsibility to find solutions to handle international

History - Essay Example 1). The term 'Black Death' can refer to either the pneumonic plague or the bubonic plague. â€Å"The pneumonic plague is the deadlier of the two diseases killing its victims is two to three days† (Spielvogel, 2003, p. 275). It was strongest in the larger cities because of the dense populations that lived there and the less sanitary conditions that could be maintained in these urban areas. â€Å"The plague would visit an area, last for about a year, kill about one-third of the population, and move on. †¦ Most historians believe that between 1347 and 1351, at least one-third of Europe’s total human population (20 to 30 million people) died† (Piccolo, 2004). Deaths alone were not the only by-product of the Plague, though. The way the church handled the crisis and the large number of deaths that took place affected the economic, social and political landscape of this large region of the world. The first outbreak of the plague was strongest in the poorer sections of the city because these people were more likely to live in unsanitary conditions and had limited means by which to protect their health. Modern science is able to confirm the Plague was spread by the rat flea who took the disease from the rat and spread it to the human population, so areas that were infested with rats were among the first to show symptoms (Gottfried, 1983). ... Frightened churchmen shut up their churches and fled to the country as did many people in the secular world (Luftus et al, 1999). Because of their ineffectiveness in the crisis, the church lost a great deal of its authority and leadership and the people began to question whether it should ever have held that position. Many people assumed God was angry with them and much more penitent and harsh religious practices were developed to appease God’s wrath through sacrifice. Economic conditions changed dramatically as competitors from other countries entered the market through the development of the guilds. The guilds changed economic conditions for individual citizens and introduced another means by which cities and towns might be run. â€Å"The effects of regression on rural economy were far-reaching. Labour was scarce and wages rose rapidly. In England and in Castile and elsewhere legislation was attempted to fix wages, but without success† (Nohl, 1926, p. 20). Workers, es pecially peasants who were finally making a decent wage, rebelled violently to suggested pay reductions and though the intent was sound, its affects were disastrous. At the same time that the Plague was decimating the population, the faith in the One Religion and changing the economic base of entire nations, the Catholic Church was engaged in an all-out war on itself. Pope Clement V declined to move to Rome when he was appointed in 1305 and moved the papacy to Avignon supposedly because of civil unrest in Rome, but more likely so he would be closer to the French monarchy he served (Menache, 2002). By 1378, this had become a problem. After struggling against a highly suspicious and
